PART 2: “Am I Experiencing PTSD? Signs of Trauma”

Am I Experiencing PTSD?

Many people don’t realise they may be experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms.

PTSD isn’t only for veterans or major accidents. It can develop after:

  • Childhood emotional neglect
  • Ongoing criticism or instability
  • Domestic violence
  • Sudden loss
  • Medical trauma
  • Workplace bullying
  • Car accidents
  • Assault

Sometimes symptoms appear years later.

Common PTSD Symptoms in Adults

PTSD symptoms generally fall into four categories:

1️⃣ Re-Experiencing

  • Flashbacks
  • Intrusive memories
  • Nightmares
  • Strong emotional reactions to reminders

2️⃣ Avoidance

  • Avoiding certain places or conversations
  • Emotional numbness
  • Staying busy to avoid thinking

3️⃣ Hyperarousal

  • Feeling constantly on edge
  • Irritability
  • Sleep problems
  • Exaggerated startle response

4️⃣ Negative Mood Changes

  • Persistent guilt or shame
  • Loss of interest
  • Feeling disconnected from others
  • Difficulty experiencing positive emotions

You do not need every symptom for trauma therapy to help.

“But It Was a Long Time Ago…”

Trauma symptoms can remain in the nervous system long after the event.

Your body may still react as if the threat is current — even when your thinking brain knows you’re safe.

That’s not weakness. It’s biology.
